Where Did Summer Go?!

It’s not that I haven’t been working on quilts – I definitely have! It’s that summer is always a little shorter than we think it’s going to be when we’re looking at it in June. I was laid off in June, and I told myself I’d use the time of unemployment to get a bunch of projects done. Poof – now summer’s over. Projects? Still not done. Maybe fall will be my season…

But I have indeed gotten some quilts done! The Gimsøy quilt and the Acadia quilt are done, and I’m very happy with them. Then I looked around and said “now what?” and started a couple more. I finished what I wanted to get done for my presentation, so anything else I get done is just bonus material. (And frankly, I’ve been practicing my presentation – it’s too long already.) So let’s take a look at the two I finished.

The tree and the gravestones on the Gimsøy quilt were a lot harder than they look. I redid the gravestones several times before I got them the right size so they didn’t look tiny and out-of-place, and the first version of the tree was much too fat and needed several trimmings before it looked even mildly realistic.

This is one of the simplest quilts I’ve done in this project. I did do some visible stitching before I quilted it. I added lines on the church to show where outside walls begin and end, and there’s some zigzag stitching at the base of each gravestone to imitate grass. I also used a decorative stitch on my machine to sew down the tree and add some dimension to it. Quilting is simple stitch-in-the-ditch at the transitions between sky and mountain and water and grass, just to sew the layers together. Like other quilts, this one didn’t need visible quilting for movement.

I’ve already talked about the Acadia quilt, but the last time I posted about it, it still wasn’t quite done. Here’s the finished quilt.

So those two are all set for the presentation, and now I can move on to other quilts!
