The first edition of this handbook was produced in the 1980s; I found it initially on microfiche in the basement of a library at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. When I approached the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) about revising it, they didn’t know anything about it and had to go searching through their archives. Eventually, they found a paper copy, which they sent to me for scanning.
I had significant help with the whole project. I asked friends and former colleagues who were more experienced with, say, Admissions and College Counseling to tackle those chapters. NAIS’s lawyers looked at visa requirements and SEVIS. The one chapter I revised on my own was the chapter on academics, here for your perusal in PDF format of my original Word document.
The book is no longer available in print and there are many parts of it that are likely now out-of-date, but I believe its successor lives on via NAIS’s website if you have a login. You can also access the book at the Internet Archive here.
